Environmental sound work

Inside Voice is grounded in the place where I live. The work is framed by recordings of environmental sound from around Te Awakairangi – my garden, the hills nearby, a busy urban street. Inside and behind, edited piano improvisations creep into view, shaded by a layer of live electronic alteration. The process of layering affects our reception of the materials – taking an aesthetic stance towards environmental sound, but also placing musical performance at a distance, so that the roles of foreground and background interchange, and are made ambiguous.
